Position

Reporting to the CEO and serving as an independent member of the Management Team, this position's primary responsibility is establishing policies and procedures for the Forensic Department ensuring the adherence to all professional standards as well as providing clear evidence and proving the existence of primarily financial crime or fraud. The Forensic Specialist provides impartial (scientific) evidence for use in courts of law to support the prosecution or defense in criminal and civil investigations.

The main areas of forensics in which the job activities of this position will work in are jurisprudence and criminalistics as well as in the investigative accounting. However, there is a degree of cross-over and the Forensic Specialist may consult with internal and external experts in various fields (e.g. investigators, police, lawyers, police, prosecutors, judges) to enhance and clarify his/her own interpretation of collected evidence. Regularly, the Forensic Specialist testifies in court and report to police departments about the evidence collected and the techniques used to analyze it.

The Forensic Specialist employs absolute objectivity in institutional assessments, authorizes the publication of reports based on a critical review of selected work papers and draft reports. S/he ensures that findings are communicated in an effective manner which will encourage implementation of legal measures. The Forensic Specialist uses his knowledge of (tax) law and accounting practices to investigate all manner of fraudulent bookkeeping, including tax evasion, embezzlement and money laundering. Reports are issued to the Management Board and Supervisory Board.

The role requires effective and strong leadership skills by providing sound advice on methods to achieve clear evidence on internal and/or external fraud and criminal activities and proving the truth based on scientific evidence. In addition the Forensic Specialist potentially must verbally back his conclusions in court, so a strong communication and speaking background is necessary.

A knowledgeable background in the legal and/or criminalistics area can be to ones advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Exploring possible links between suspects and criminal activity using the results of scientific analyses
  • Consulting and liaising with experts in related or specialized fields, such as investigators, police, lawyers, prosecutors, judges
  • Collecting, cataloging and preserving criminal evidence that may be used to solve cases
  • Writing detailed reports for court, ttestifying as an expert witness on evidence in trials or hearings
  • Proactively increasing the usefulness, availability, and reliability of forensic evidence and objective forensic information used as evidence in trials and criminal proceedings
  • Presenting results of work in written form or by giving oral evidence; instructing on procedures for cases
  • Reconstructing criminal patterns in order to figure out if and how pieces of evidence are related
  • Conducting and assisting in external and internal investigations
  • Supporting group investigations as well as co-investigations performed (with colleagues from the headquarters forensic department)
  • Independent accomplishment of investigations regarding the compliance with legal requirements and accomplishment of “special investigations” (fraud, criminal suspicion, ad hoc risks, etc.)
  • Anticipating emerging issues through research and interviews and deciding how best to deal with them
  • Providing support and guidance to the organization´s Management Board on how to handle detected problematic areas or detected issues and to establish forensic strategies.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with already gained knowledgeable background and expertise in the field of forensics, and a demonstrated qualification in applying the law to present, dealing with numbers and enjoying finance, and especially the idea of following a money trail to help weed out financial crime, corruption, graft and white collar crime.

Excellent communication skills are important in order to testify forensic evidence in court proceedings. The Forensic Specialist must also possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail and objectivity to analyze evidence and interpret scientific results. In addition to needing problem solving and critical thinking skills, the candidate should demonstrate a proactive attitude for assessing the business´ compliance to rules and regulations as well as a hands-on, but highly organized and well-structured approach to addressing detected issues to attorneys and to the Management Board.

A background in law enforcement and an understanding of, or experience with, the law and legal procedures can be helpful.

Specific requirements include:

professional:

  • University degree in Forensic Science, Law, Natural Science or Finance; alternative an undergraduate degree in the Natural Sciences and a master’s degree in Forensic Science
  • Minimum 3+ years experience in a forensic related work environment including police departments, government agencies, investigation and security service organizations, prosecutors’ offices, law firms, and/or consulting firms
  • Sound command of written and oral English
  • Specific expertise/knowledge in law enforcement appreciated
