Established in 2010, UN Women is a dynamic and strong global champion for women and girls. The unanimous decision by the United Nations General Assembly to create UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, to be known as UN Women, was enthusiastically welcomed by the four UN agencies: UNIFEM, DAW, INSTRAW and OSAGI, whose merge was part of UN reform agenda to achieve greater impact. UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. One of the main dimensions of the UN Women mandate is the coordination within the UN system and country teams on the local level.

The UN Volunteer will support the overall programmatic and coordination work of the UN Women Country Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and directly support the implementation of UNCT Joint Working Plan 2017-2018 on gender equality and empowerment of women and Joint Plan on gender mainstreaming in the UNCT 2017-2018.UN Women recognizes equality between women and men as a fundamental pillar of a just and democratic society and supports the promotion of equal opportunities for the full participation of women in all aspects of political, economic and public life. UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programs and services needed to implement these standards. It stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on five priority areas: increasing women’s leadership and participation; ending violence against women; engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; enhancing women’s economic empowerment; and making gender equality central to national development planning and budgeting.
