National Expert in Geography for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Geography) Expert Working Group

Project name: ENABLE BiH – Enhancing and Advancing Learning Outcomes in Basic Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Anticipated duration of assignment: January 2017 – December 2017

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Save the Children in North West Balkans is currently implementing the project titled “Enhancing and Advancing Basic Learning and Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina (ENABLE-BiH“). The project aims to contribute to the improvement of the students learning outcomes by drafting Operational Teaching Curriculum (OTC) for STEM proficiencies based on the Common Core Curriculum (CCC) as well as for drafting Standards and Operational Guidelines for Pedagogy, Psychology, Didactics and Teaching Methods (PPDM). The project foresees establishment of the STEM and PPDM expert groups comprised of the local experts who will work on drafting the aforementioned documents.

ROLE AND FUNCTION OF THE STEM EXPERT WORKING GROUP:

The STEM working group will, in close cooperation with international STEM experts, consultations with wider relevant audiences as well as the Project Advisory Board (PAB), work on drafting Operational Teaching Curriculum (OTC) for STEM proficiencies based on the Common Core Curriculum (CCC). In addition to the OTC for STEM proficiencies based on CCC, the STEM working group will also develop a set of accompanying documents – Implementation Guidelines and Manuals for Teachers’ Training.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCES FOR THE EXPERT IN GEOGRAPHY:

University professor/assistant professor with minimum 10 year teaching experience and professional engagement in the area of Geography;
Knowledge and expertise in specific areas of Biology – Molecular Biology; Botany, Cellular Biology, Physiology, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Biochemistry and other related sub-areas;
Experience in Geography curriculum development for primary and/or secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Knowledge of the cross-curricular (STEM in particular) teaching and/or learning practices in the primary and/or secondary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina;
Strong background in teaching methods, primary and secondary school teaching or pedagogy with both practical and theoretical knowledge and experience in classroom teaching in Geography;
Understanding of current legislation and institutional set up of educational system in BiH, key stakeholders and educational reform processes;
Published work in relevant national and international journals;
Participation and presentation at relevant national and international conferences;
Awareness of European and/or North American developments in Geography and/or science education;
Fluency in both written and spoken English and B/H/S languages.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to research, review and synthesize information from a range of sources and conceptualise learning in terms of learning outcomes paradigm;
Ability to establish effective working relations within the STEM expert working group;
Ability to meet deadlines with high-quality outputs;
Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills;
Strong computer skills;
Commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children, the organisational mandate and child safeguarding.
